According to their website, Airbnb is an online community marketplace that connects people looking to rent their homes with people who are looking for accommodations. Airbnb users include hosts and travelers: hosts list and rent out their unused spaces, and travelers search for and book accommodations around the world.
To be exact, they have accommodations in over 34,000 cities and 191 countries worldwide.
They were founded in August of 2008 and are based in San Francisco, California. Airbnb is a trusted community marketplace, which can be utilized through a laptop, mobile, or tablet.
The idea for Airbnb was thought of by Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia. At the time, roommates Chesky and Gebbia could not afford the rent for their loft in San Francisco, so they made their living room into a bed and breakfast, and accommodated three guests and even provided homemade breakfast.
The initial name for Airbnb was AirBed & Breakfast and its origins began with a sold-out design trade show known as the Industrial Design Conference. The original site offered short-term living quarters, breakfast, and a unique business networking opportunity for those who were unable to rent a hotel in the extremely busy market.
Airbnb is another example of a successful and innovative company that is born out of the rising popularity of the sharing economy.
